Unyielding, unblinking, I study the expressionless face of the King. It feels as if we have been at a stare-off for hours. Lex is breathing heavily from behind me, I’m not sure if it is nervousness or rage. I press my back against his chest looking for any sign of comfort. The weight of his chest against my back slightly calms down my nerves. The King doesn’t flinch—it seems he takes great joy in unnerving his court. After what seems an eternity, he finally speaks his law.

“Prove yourself worthy, and I will grant you kinship with this island. Fail and you will be banished from my court. Your fate is in your hands, Miss Dagon. I advise you to wield this time wisely and do as I wish.”

I breathe out a sigh of relief, allowing my tense posture to relax slightly against Lex’s chest. Lex pauses his breathing, waiting on bated breath on what the King will say next. Nerves tickle my spine, my breath catching in my throat with anticipation.

“I will, Your Majesty,” I responded, determined to go the safe route. What he wants me to do couldn’t be that bad now, could it? “What must I do?” I hope it is something so simple, something so mindlessly simple, I can quickly complete it and move on with my life. I’m ready for the next chapter of my life-for the better part to start.

“For many millennia, my people have fought off many evils. Many of these evils are demons that hunt on my people. They kidnap and torture them. I want you to get rid of these vile creatures, then, and only then, will I grant you a home in my kingdom. If you please me, there will be so much more waiting for you than you initially had bargained for. I can promise you that you will be thrilled.” His eyes gleam as if he is plotting about what he has in store for me. I’m not sure if he is more thrilled to get rid of the demons, or for what he has planned for me.

What he wants isn’t so terrible. I’ve done it once and I can do it again. I’ve killed many men and a demon—one who once was my captor. If this is what it takes, I will do it. I’ll do anything, I mentally scoff at how desperate I sound. How desperate I am to have a home, a better life. But I’ve done worse for less. This is nothing.

Lex then attempts to move closer to the throne. His face becomes contorted in pain, as if he were trying to push through an unseen force to get to the King. He breaks through, his face flashing in pain, as he stands at the bottom of the dais, looking up at the King. “My King, there must be something else. Layla has only just picked up the sword. She isn’t ready yet.”

The King holds up a silent hand and glowers down at Lex. “Remember your place, my soldier.
